Famous Concept Pop Bands
Most bands are formed when a number of people get together and decide that they want to create music together. They often share ideology, background and musical taste. However, a concept band is one that brings together a group of people who may have nothing in common for the sole purpose of making money. In many ways, these are the most commercial bands, and yet they can be among the most successful.
The Monkees were the brainchild of Bert Schneider and Bob Rafelson. These two men recognized the potential of a TV series based on a rock or pop band. They pitched this idea to Screen-Gems. The idea sold and the project went into gear. The first thing that was needed were members for the group. Initially, the idea was to hire a local group, but this thought was rejected and the creative team decided to send out a casting call for interested people.
The request for actors was placed in both the Hollywood Reporter and the Daily Variety. The final cuts were made, and the chosen four were Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork. The next challenge for the creative team was getting these four men in a position to be able to play the parts of musicians. Peter Tork could play keyboard and a number of other instruments. Mike Nesmith and Micky could both play the guitar but none of the four played the drums. Davy Jones was not given the role of drummer because he could barely be seen from behind the drums, so Micky was elected.
The show was a huge success, and many albums were sold. The band hit the charts and became one the first bands in history to have number one hits in both the UK and the USA at the same time. They held the number one spot in the USA for 31 straight weeks.
The nineties saw the creation of the Spice Girls. The Spice Girls were formed in 1994. The group consisted of five members - Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Melanie Brown (Scary spice), Victoria Adams (Posh Spice), Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) and Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice). Their first single entitled "Wannabe" was released in 1996. This song reached the number one position in more than thirty different countries and launched the pop band into the realms of stardom.
The Spice Girls were the creation of the father and son team, Bob and Chris Herbert. Their vision was to create an all girl pop band that would rival the popularity of the all boy pop bands that were currently popular. They wanted to create a group that would target not only young girls, but boys as well. The pop boy bands of the time had an almost all young female following, and they had very little appeal to men of any age.
This was the goal of the two when they put out their first recruitment ad. The ad appeared in “The Stage”, a magazine that catered to people in the industry. It asked for women between the age of 18 and 23 who could both dance and sing. More than 400 women answered the ad and went to audition. It took weeks to complete the auditions and to make all the cuts, but in the end, Chris and Bob had their girls.
These are two of the most well known concept bands. The Spice Girls became famous and broke record after record. They became the most successful all girl band ever. Moreover, The Monkees, in their time, achieved a level of success that many bands can only dream of.
